Each year, November 25th, marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Launched in 2008, this day serves as a powerful reminder of the urgent need to address the global epidemic of violence against women and girls. As a community, we must come together to break the silence and take action to prevent and respond to this widespread human rights violation.

Facts & Black Hawk County Statistics

Violence against women is a staggering reality that affects millions of women and girls worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, 1 in 3 women will experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. In the United States, 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence. In Iowa and Black Hawk County, the statistics are just as alarming.

  • In 2023, there were 216 domestic abuse victims in Black Hawk County (Iowa Department of Public Safety).
  • Iowa ranks second in the nation for the percentage of women that have experienced domestic violence.
  • In 2023, there were 41 reported sexual assaults in Black Hawk County (Iowa Uniform Crime Reporting).

Violence against women and girls is still massively unreported due to stigma, shame, fear, and lack of accountability for perpetrators.

The Impact

Violence against women has far-reaching ramifications, affecting not only the individual but also their families, communities, and society as a whole. It can lead to physical and emotional harm, social isolation, and even death. Moreover, it perpetuates gender inequality, reinforces harmful gender stereotypes, and hinders women's economic and social empowerment.

Victims of violence are often “invisible victims” because these acts occur behind closed doors. The concept of invisible victims is a good reminder to treat everyone with kindness and respect, because we never know what might be going on in someone’s life.

Breaking the Silence

At YWCA Black Hawk County, we believe that breaking the silence is the first step towards creating a world free from violence against women. We must create a culture where survivors feel empowered to share their stories, and where perpetrators are held accountable for their actions. We must also work to address the root causes of violence, including gender inequality, discrimination, and harmful social norms and practices.
