Updated Wed June 19, 2024
At the YWCA of Black Hawk County, we believe that language is the key to unlocking a world of opportunities. It is the medium through which we connect, learn, and grow. That’s why we are proud to offer comprehensive Multicultural Services and English Classes to our community, ensuring that every voice is heard and every dream has the chance to become a reality.
Language, Advocacy, Resources & Support
Our English Classes are designed for individuals who are not yet proficient in English. Here, in a supportive and welcoming environment, you can learn English alongside others from the community. These classes are more than just language lessons; they are a gateway to a fuller, more integrated life in the community.
Understanding that life’s obligations don’t pause for education, we offer free transportation and child care to remove barriers to attendance. This group also provides community resource information, community activities, wellness information, and group support.
Our classes are ongoing, and you can begin at any time that suits you. For those looking to enhance their language skills, our Advanced English class meets every Monday from 11:15 am to 12:30 pm. If you’re just starting your language journey, our Basic English class is available every Wednesday from 6:15 pm to 7:30 pm.
Multicultural Services
In the vibrant tapestry of our community, every thread counts. The YWCA of Black Hawk County is dedicated to ensuring that every member, regardless of language, has the opportunity to weave their story into the fabric of our society. Our Multicultural Services are the loom on which these threads come together, creating a stronger, more colorful community.
Bilingual Support for a Diverse Community
Our bilingual staff stands ready to assist non-English speaking individuals and families, as well as those working within the non-English speaking community. We understand the challenges that language barriers can present, and we are here to help navigate them with compassion and expertise.
Comprehensive Services for Inclusive Growth
We offer a range of services tailored to meet the needs of our diverse population:
- Translation and Interpretation: Communicating effectively is crucial. Our services ensure that language differences do not hinder the ability to obtain information, express needs, or engage with the community.
- Community Resource Information: Knowledge is power, and we provide access to essential information about local resources, services, and programs available to residents.
- Referrals: Whether it’s finding the right healthcare provider, legal assistance, or educational opportunities, we guide individuals to the services they require.
- Job Assistance: Employment is a key step towards self-sufficiency. We offer support in job searching, resume building, and interview preparation to help community members secure meaningful employment.
Accessibility for All
We believe that financial constraints should never be a barrier to accessing our services. That’s why most of our services are offered free of charge, although some fees may apply for certain specialized services.
